The standard behind a BCACT credential
Employers, insurers, employee assistance providers, health authorities, and educational institutions rely on credentials to make decisions. This page sets out precisely what BCACT registration verifies, and what it does not.
What registration verifies
- The practitioner's education has been assessed against a published standard.
- A defined volume of supervised clinical practice has been completed and verified.
- The practitioner has agreed to the BCACT Code of Professional Ethics.
- The practitioner is subject to a professional conduct process with real outcomes, including removal from the register.
- The practitioner has confirmed continuing professional development and liability insurance at their most recent renewal.
What registration does not verify
- Suitability for a specific role, caseload, or client population — that remains your assessment.
- Competence in a modality the practitioner has not declared to BCACT.
- Employment history, references, or criminal record checks, which you should obtain directly.
- Any guarantee of clinical outcome.
BCACT registration should form part of your due diligence, not the whole of it. It confirms a professional standard has been met; it does not replace your own recruitment, contracting, or credentialing checks.

Verifying and reporting
Registration can be confirmed at any time through the public register. Organizations that need to verify a large number of practitioners, or that require written confirmation for audit purposes, can contact verification@bcact.ca.
If your organization becomes aware of conduct that may breach the Code of Professional Ethics, you can raise a concern through the professional conduct process in the same way as a member of the public.
